The design approach was to integrate the new and the existing building with a proficient understanding of the character of the site and its context. The primary design concept for extension of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Islamabad involved giving utmost respect to the existing building layout creating a new backbone to connect the old and new structures. A new distribution / control point composed of a sheer glazed facade has been created which links the two building blocks and also acts as a secondary entrance for the whole premises thus reducing load on the existing. In its planning, the corridor in the existing building is further extended to form the new backbone of the whole complex making pedestrian circulation convenient. This main corridor (the backbone) divides the new building into two parts on either side. Both sides due to their area and scale invite two different types of programs. The smaller area on the north side consists of small scale programs i.e. offices, waiting area, library, prayer halls and all sorts of services whereas bigger area on the other part encompasses large scale programs like examination halls and conference halls. These halls spaces are kept flexible for various sized activities to be accommodated in different times or at one given time. Catering to the increasing pedestrian loads, two lifts have been proposed in the centre of the two buildings for convenient accesses within the buildings.
Building is being envisioned to optimize the energy efficiency & self-sustainability and control its operational & maintenance costs. This is being done through the use of intelligent systems modern gadgets / components and appropriate / local finishing materials. The choice of thermal insulation in wall sections cladded with fair-face pre fabricated concrete tiles with a combination of local stone or locally available bricks for the building envelope, Double glazed high performance Low-E glass windows for all the apertures, appropriate sun shading devices to cut down solar gains wherever necessary and suggesting appropriate alternative energy mechanisms to severely cut down on our energy bills shall be the salient features of the project.
By integrating all these aspects, one can claim that the College of Physicians and Surgeons Islamabad (new building block) will set new standards of excellence for an effective, energy efficient and smart building solution of today.
